Ball Valves for
Energy and Power Plants
Ball valves are used in energy and power plant systems as reliable shut-off valves for liquid and gaseous media. They are used, for example, in conventional power plants, combined-cycle power plants (CCPP) as well as in biomass and industrial power plants.

Typical areas of application include:
• Cooling water and auxiliary water systems
• Lines for gaseous media, e.g. operating and auxiliary gases
• Fuel supply (gas, oil)
• Gas pressure regulating and metering systems (GPRMS)
• Maintenance, bypass and manifold systems
This includes, among other things, flanged ball valves, ball valves with threaded connection and ball valves with weld ends. Depending on the medium, pressure rating and plant requirements, these are made of either steel or stainless steel.
Application examples
In cooling water applications, ball valves are often exposed to particular mechanical loads. Deposits, solids or abrasive constituents in the medium can place heavy strain on conventional soft seals. For these applications, metallic sealing systems are therefore used, offering high wear resistance and enabling reliable, long-lasting operation even under demanding operating conditions.
Combined-cycle power plants
In CCPPs (combined-cycle power plants), these valves are used at key points in the gas supply, in particular as:
• Main gas shut-off upstream of the gas turbine
• Shut-off device for individual gas paths (e.g. multi-block systems)
• Isolation point between the GPRMS and the power plant gas line

• High pressure ratings
• Large nominal diameters for high gas volume flows
• TA Luft 2021, ISO 15848
(Low-fugitive-emission stem sealing)
• ATEX conformity and blowout-proof stem
• Materials for natural gas and, if applicable, H₂ content
These valves enable reliable and safe isolation of the entire plant from the gas grid.
Manual or automatic actuation
The ball valves can be operated manually via hand lever or, depending on the plant concept, by pneumatic or electric actuators. This enables both local operation and integration into automated and control-room-operated systems.
The design and manufacture of the ball valves is carried out in accordance with the Pressure Equipment Directive PED 2014/68/EU as well as the AD 2000 code, thus meeting the fundamental requirements for safe use in energy and power plant applications.
